Sump Pump Services - Installation and Maintenance
Every sump pump is installed within a sump pump basin. Once water accumulates to a certain level within the basin, the pump activates and evacuates the water into the city storm drains. There are a few ways that water can accumulate within the basin; one way is by the French drains that are located around the foundation of your home or building, by the underground water found under the foundation. the sump pump will remove any water that is around the foundation in order to avoid humidity and mold from appearing in the basement.

The most common issue with a sump pump emergency is the float switch. A float switch turns the sump pump motor from on to off once the water level becomes too high in the basin. Since the switch is the most important part of a sump pump, having space around the float and switch to be able to arm is very important. If the basin is too small and there isn’t sufficient room or if there is an obstruction in the way, the float will likely cause the sump pump to work improperly, which can cause the motor to burn if it is always running.

Like any other moving parts, a sump pump will need maintenance in order to avoid the pump from failing. We at 5 Star Drain recommend having your sump pump examined every year. Pumps that run frequently due to higher water level around the foundation or weather conditions should be examined more frequently. One part which is commonly overlooked is the check valve. A sump pump’s check valve creates a barrier that prevents any water from flowing backward into the basin. Without a proper functioning check valve, a sump pump would be constantly working to pump out water. We at 5 Star Drain always recommend replacing a check valve during a scheduling routine maintenance or the replacement of a sump pump to avoid an emergency flood.
Testing your system in the fall and spring is highly recommended due to water levels being higher during these periods. A simple way of making this test is taking a 5-gallon bucket filled with water and slowly pouring it within the basin. Once you see the float trigger, check to see how quickly the water level drops and, eventually, the pump will shut off, once it reaches the shutoff level. If these steps don't happen with your sump pump system, you may need to repair or replace your pump.
Is it normal that my sump pump is constantly running?
The question we are most often asked is if it's common to have a sump pump that is constantly running. The answer is yes and no. Here is why:
-
When your sump pump runs constantly, even when there is no rainfall, it is an indication that you might have a problem with your sump pump.
-
When in the springtime, without any rain, your sump pump is constantly running, it is an indication that everything is running smoothly with your sump pump, because snow is melting and the frosted ground keeps the water above ground level.
-
When it's the dead of winter, it's snowing outside and your sump pump is constantly running, it's an indication that you need to replace your sump pump.

Two Types of Sump Pumps
You will notice that there are two types of sump pumps that can be installed in a home or a business, either a pedestal pump or a submersible pump. A pedestal pump is an upright pump that is mounted inside the sump pump basin. The motor is located outside the basin and is not meant to get wet. The pump impeller is connected to the vertical shaft which sits into the basin, while the motor is at the other end of the shaft outside of the basin. The submersible pump, on the other hand is entirely mounted inside the basin underwater, including the motor. It's specially sealed to reduce the noise of the pump and to avoid any debris from falling in.
